Chronic tonsillitis (CT) is among the most prevalent conditions in otolaryngology and is associated with an increased risk of significant local and systemic complications. Prevention and early diagnosis of CT remain major challenges in clinical practice. The increasing emphasis on preventive medicine underscores the need for effective tools to identify individuals at elevated risk during the pre-nosological stage. To achieve this, comprehensive analysis of both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors is essential. Frequent acute respiratory infections represent a modifiable risk factor for CT development. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms is a significant clinical concern and correlates with more severe disease progression. Acute respiratory infections and sore throat often lead to unnecessary prescriptions of systemic antibacterial agents. In most cases, except for streptococcal tonsillitis, antibiotics constitute overtreatment because they are ineffective against viral infections. In non-surgical therapy, agents that both suppress the inflammatory response and modulate the immune response are of particular interest. This article evaluates the potential of modern phytotherapy in managing acute respiratory tract infections. The herbal medicinal products discussed are included in clinical guidelines, and their use is supported by pathogenetic rationale.
