A new method of demographic analysis is proposed - the method of rank indices of age-specific viability (RIAV), based on ranking countries by age-specific mortality rates. Using five-year life tables from the World Population Prospects 2024, the study assesses the dynamics of viability of the Russian population relative to 194 countries worldwide from 1990 to 2023. It is established that over this period, Russia’s competitiveness in terms of population viability (especially among males of working age) has significantly declined and by 2023 had not recovered to the 1990 level. Among females, a sustained decline in RIAV is also observed for ages over 25 years. The method is shown to identify age groups with critical levels of comparative mortality that are not evident from traditional life expectancy analysis. For Russia, the method can serve as an effective supplement to standard demographic monitoring, as well as be used to analyze other age-dependent indicators (e.g., healthy life expectancy) and to develop target criteria for national projects in demography and public health.
